PASSION > PROFIT ✨ According to the Art Basel & PASSION > PROFIT ✨

According to the Art Basel & UBS 2024 survey, 40% of collectors said their main motivation when buying art is self-identity or personal pleasure—outpacing financial gain, which stood at 24%.

This week the @financialtimes emphasized this shift in the article ‘Sex, love or money? What art collecting is really about’. In brief, for today’s top collectors, passion rather than profit appears to be the primary motive.

The smartest collectors don’t just ask “What’s hot?”—they ask:

🎨 Does this align with my story?

🎨 Is there substance beneath the surface?

🎨 Am I collecting for legacy, liquidity, or love?

As a seasoned art advisor, my role is to help discerning collectors align instinct with insight—guiding you toward works that not only move you, but stand the test of time.

ART SMART 🌿 Gut vs. Art Market—when to trust ART SMART 🌿
Gut vs. Art Market—when to trust your instincts, and when to lean on the data?

While your intuition might spark the connection, seasoned collectors know that lasting value often follows the market. Here’s how to strike the right balance:

✅Trust your gut when👇

🖼️ A piece gives you the feels.

🖼️ You keep coming back to it—can’t stop thinking about it.

🖼️ You love it—even if no one else “gets it” (yet).

✅Trust the market when👇

🔎 You’re making a major acquisition with resale potential.

🔎 Prices are soaring—hype may signal a market correction.

🔎 You’re building a collection that needs strategy and staying power.

🎯 Best practice? Let both guide you.

Collect with heart—but back it with insight. At HLK Art Group, we help clients build collections with soul and substance.

🖼️ Save this for your next acquisition—and DM if you’re ready to level up your collection.

MORNING LIGHT🌸☀️ For those collecting with MORNING LIGHT🌸☀️

For those collecting with an eye for color, cadence, and contemporary lyricism—#ColleenHerman hits the mark. I’m thrilled to have recently placed her work in a large institutional collection for wider audiences to appreciate.

Colleen paints in a language all her own—one fluent in rhythm, restraint, and radiant color. Her canvases pulse with movement, but never lose their grounding.

Rooted in the legacy of Abstract Expressionism (yes, we’re looking at you, #MaryLeeAbbott and #HelenFrankenthaler), her work resists pure abstraction. Instead, she captures fleeting moments—like sunlight dappling across flower petals or the shifting seasons.

Her painting above titled Shhh (2024), from her latest series, hums with that same delicate touch. To me, it aptly captures the hush of morning light, right before the day blooms into itself.🌸

Herman lives and works in New York and has participated in numerous local solo and group exhibitions.

FRIEZE OPENING 🖼️ ✨ Join me for a VIP wal FRIEZE OPENING 🖼️

✨ Join me for a VIP walk-through of Freize NY at the iconic Shed in Manhattan!

The energy was electric despite a cooling market—proof that bold vision and sharp curation still captivate. Collectors were cautious but intentional, and galleries are meeting them with patience and precision. Sales remained steady despite the slower pace.

Here’s my roundup of what’s making waves:

👀Highlights & Booths to Watch:

👉#ThaddeausRopac delivered high with museum-worthy works by #marthajungwirth,#joansnyder #alexkatz and #HansJosephsohn (a large bronze was just acquired by The Met).
👉#Gagosian brought the drama with #JeffKoons’s “Hulk Elvis” sculptures—one sold for a reported $3M within hours.
👉#Perrotin’s solo booth of #ClaireTabouret’s luminous portraits sold out quickly, with prices ranging from $65K to $200K.
👉#WhiteCube placed a #TraceyEmin painting for £1.2M and a bronze sculpture for £80K, while also selling works by #EtelAdnan and #AntonyGormley.

🌟 Artists in the Spotlight
#Tabboo! (#StephenTashjian) is having a moment. His vivid, queer-coded paintings at #KarmaGallery bridge generations and histories.
#YehwanSong’s digital installation at #GGallery critiques algorithmic systems with poetic force.
#LuanaVitra’s eco-political sculptures at #MitreGaleria confront Brazil’s mining industry with raw materiality.

🔮 Forecast
The fair is a study in contrasts: maximalist spectacle meets minimalist restraint, institutional gravitas meets emerging urgency. The art world is recalibrating, and this fair is a compass.

📍 Frieze New York runs through May 11 at The Shed, Hudson Yards. Don’t miss it.

Janet Echelman’s ethereal 1.8 Renwick floats through the Grand Salon of the @americanart at the #Smithsonian, a cathedral of color and light. Woven from knotted twine and suspended in space, the sculpture breathes with movement, shadow, and grace—transformed by a shifting symphony of light.

It’s a modern resurrection of form, embodying the strength and softness of womanhood, ever-changing and luminous.

LEN & LOUISE🌿 ✨ Sneak peek: The Riggio’s l LEN & LOUISE🌿

✨ Sneak peek: The Riggio’s legendary collection is hitting the auction block at Christie’s this May.

Flashback to when I had the privilege to visit their Hamptons estate with ArtTable and fellow board members: Imagine stepping into a secret garden where every path leads to a masterpiece. 🖼️🌿 Proof that collecting isn’t just about having art — it’s about living with it.

[Scroll to see some of the wonderful masterworks from the Bridgehampton estate, as well as works that are coming up at auction from #PietMondrian and #ReneMagritte and #GlennLigon and #KerryJamesMarshall!]

Save this as a reminder: Great collectors don’t just acquire — they curate a life. 🎯

About the auction: For over 30 years, Leonard ‘Len’ Riggio, the entrepreneurial founder of #Barnes&Noble, and his wife #LouiseRiggio amassed a formidable collection of #20thcenturyart. Fueled by the couple’s lifelong pursuit of knowledge and spirit of discovery, the collection for sale represents an anthology of the artists who challenged some of our most established ideas about art, culture, and society. From Mondrian’s pioneering approach to abstraction to Marshall's radical African American portraiture, the collection is a roll-call of 20th-century masterpieces in dialogue with one another.

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL Who's deconstructing ph MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL

Who's deconstructing photography’s illusions most of all? #EileenQuinlan 📸✨

Quinlan isn't just pushing the boundaries of what a photograph is — she’s smashing them, setting them on fire, and coolly rebuilding them in the name of feminist history and radical self-awareness.

Her images aren't windows into the world; they're mirrors reflecting back all the messy mechanics of how we present, consume, and believe images today.

Equal parts mesmerizing and unsettling (in the best way), Quinlan's work invites you to lean in and pulls the rug out from under you.

She's exhibited everywhere that matters — the Venice Biennale, MoMA, the Met, the Whitney...(basically, her CV is more stacked than my coffee table during art fair season).

I'm beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to place her work into a permanent collection, ensuring these reflections (and disruptions) endure for generations to come. ✨

Thank you @miguelabreugallery for championing such powerhouse talent. 🚀

ART & PROCESS 🖌️ “I work on a lot of piece ART & PROCESS 🖌️

“I work on a lot of pieces at once and it becomes a meditative process… It’s almost like a mantra every day… less thinking, less judgment… that’s when the work breathes. Accept where you are and work with it.” – Nick McPhail

McPhail’s layered architectural paintings are rooted in observation and repetition. Blending memory, environment, and intuition, his process evokes a mindful rhythm—where form, light, and time coexist.

Xylor Jane’s paintings are intricate constellations of numbers—grids of hand-painted digits that map time, emotion, and logic. A quiet geometry pulses beneath the surface. Working with prime numbers, Fibonacci sequences, and calendrical systems, Jane’s work occupies a space between math and mysticism, order and obsession.

Both artists are deeply process-driven: McPhail’s intuitive mark-making parallels Jane’s continuous systems. In their own way, each suspends time—one through breath and brush, the other through numbers and structure. Together, they invite a different kind of looking—one that lingers, listens, and lets the logic of the work unfold slowly.

I’m elated to have place these exceptional works with an important permanent collection—where rigor, resonance, and quiet beauty find their place.
