A HUG FROM MOTHER EARTH🛖

“To be in touch with the earth and to enter within it is to be in touch with what constitutes and nourishes us; the bedrock where life develops while it is inhabited by the soul.”–#DelceyMorales

Employing earth as her primary material for over a decade, Morales’ organic environments explore the sustaining power of mud as a source of life and sustenance.

Here she has constructed two immersive, multisensory installations at the Dia Chelsea where you’re invited to caress the surfaces and breathe in aromas of cinnamon, copaiba and clove wafting through the space. She mixed clay sourced from Dia Beacon‘s property with recycled garden soil, hay and coir.

Conceived as a shrine to peat, the work El Abrazo (“The Hug”) uses sustainably sourced materials to evoke the smell and feel of this vital yet vulnerable resource in the fight against climate change (Dia: press).

The exhibition examines one of the most significant and complex artistic dialogues in the history of Modern Art—the 2-decade long relationship between Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas. IMO Manet stole the show but Degas had the last hurrah. Clearly they remain famous frenemies to this day. The last day to see the epic Manet/Degas show is tomorrow!

I love working with old historical buildings, especially in my longtime home of New York. #tbt to this HLK curation for #TheRefineryHotel, a former hat factory with a Prohibition-era tea room designed by architect #FrederickZobel.⁠

Drawing inspiration from their storied past, the curation for each floor intentionally considered the building's past a central part of the Garment District. ⁠

Known as the Colony Arcade in New York's Midtown, the historically significant building within the Garment District was completed in 1913 and was home to multiple millinery firms.

In 2014, it was finally listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is listed among the #SmallLuxuryHotelsoftheWorld. ⁠

ABMB 2023💥

As Miami shrugged off the crypto crash, this year’s South Beach edition of Art Basel was a vibrant and successful event, attracting 70,000+ visitors and 277 galleries that showcased an impressive array of works by more than 4,000 artists.

Hauser and Wirth may have won the prize for the biggest sale (guston $20m) but many galleries killed it with their art gravitas. Shout out to brave newcomers 56 Henry, Lomex, Lyles and King and Otuzar.

In typical Miami fashion, celebs were spotted— Leo, Cindy, Venus, Jeff (apropos for the world’s 3rd richest person to make an appearance at his soon to be new home). But I digress…with so much art I was bound to spot some solid gems and boy did I!

Here’s a 2 minute tour of the main fair for anyone who couldn’t be there..shots include works by #DerekFourjour, #IlanaSavdie, #CharlesGaines, #ClaudeLawrence, #Rauschenberg, #JeffreyGibson, #ThorntonDial, and many more.

PRIMAL INSTINCT🗿

Crushing on this art pairing today featuring #RichardPrince and #MarkGrotjahn in an exquisite interior by Fox Nahem.

Grotjahn's abstract “mask” painting on the left offers a striking and complex dialogue with Prince's Oedipal painting of nude and semi-nude women inspired by the ground-breaking imagery of the Abstract Expressionist master, Willem de Kooning.

The works share an affinity for early modernism’s primitivism, drawing on the past and delving into the depths of raw, primal nature. Fitting reminders to get rid of the masks we hide behind and face our truth, perhaps?

They take center stage in this refined interior ensemble.

Joe Nahem is known for his ability to combine rare works of Contemporary art and vintage furniture and collectibles within his highly bespoke custom interiors.
