ARTIST SPOTLIGHT🔎 This work was a favori ARTIST SPOTLIGHT🔎

This work was a favorite among my friends and my client, who quickly snapped it up... we love the way Nick McPhail's landscape paintings use architecture and perspective to propel the viewer into a vaguely familiar, quotidian world, while inviting reflection.

The artist weaves everyday moments we might otherwise take for granted — such as turning a random corner and catching a glimpse of the neighbor's backyard — into depictions of rich, enigmatic moments, not unlike Cézanne's streets. The artist mentally catalogues his daily walks around his home in Los Angeles, and this is the magnificent result.

McPhail graduated with a BFA in Painting and Ceramics from #MichiganStateUniversity. He has been selected for numerous artist residencies, including Untitled in Geneva, Switzerland, the #HolidayForeverResidency in Jackson, WY, #OchiGallery in Ketchum, ID, 100 West Corsicana in Corsicana, TX, and the #VermontStudioCenter in VT, and was chosen as a #HopperPrizeFinalist for 2023.

🎯 Why One Masterpiece Beats Three Maybes True 🎯 Why One Masterpiece Beats Three Maybes

True collecting begins with connoisseurship with a trained “eye" to discern subtle details of style, technique, and quality.

Great collectors know to look for that singular work where everything aligns: composition, confidence, spirit... Those are the pieces that reflect not only an artist’s practice but the integrity of an entire collection.

The finest collections are built with restraint and vision, not volume. If chosen with discernment, art will always outlast a handful of “almosts.”

✨ Buy with discernment, not impulse.

DYK❓
The term connoisseur originates from the Latin verb cognoscere, meaning "to get to know," which traveled through Old French conoisseor ("an expert")

✨Stay artwise with HLK 📚
If you’re ready to strengthen your eye and build a collection guided by true connoisseurship, HLK Art Group can help you collect with clarity, discernment, and purpose.

✨MARKED MEMORIES✨👣 A look back to The Wate ✨MARKED MEMORIES✨👣

A look back to The Watermill Center’s historic Clementine Hunter House, where artists Pipi Deer, Sylvia Hommert, Stephanie Joyce and I presented Pilgrimage — a ceremonial journey to the self and our ancestors.

Visitors walked along a path paved by a 200’ long painting we created with our own feet. 👣👣👣

At the house, visitors were invited to make charcoal “marked memories” on the façade and leave offerings at the Gazing Mirror. The artists’ works were installed in and around the single-room house, the first structure acquired for the center. Rooted in Robert Wilson’s vision of art as transformation, Pilgrimage became an experience of healing, remembrance, and community.

This collaboration was more than curating—it was community building in its purest form: creating space for others to be seen, to create, to remember. A reminder that the truest art happens not in isolation, but in connection.✨

I’m deeply grateful for the incredible artists and for the watermill center. ✨🙏

✨Artist spotlight on NY-based artist Debbi Kenote 🧡

This beautiful work harkens autumn leaves falling, long breezy hikes and cool lavender sunsets. 🍁🍂🍁

Kenote is redefining what a painting can be. Rather than settling for the traditional rectangle, she builds her own shaped stretchers—like assembling a puzzle—to create canvases that bend, curve, and reimagine space.

Her influences run deep: childhood memories, American craft traditions, and a research practice rooted in quilts, weaving, and architecture. The result? Works that are both tactile and cerebral—at once rooted in history and entirely forward-looking.

🧡I’m thrilled to have placed this work into an outstanding collection with a focus on emerging artists. Supporting artists isn’t just about acquiring a piece-it’s about investing in future generations of artists.🤎

🙏 Huge thanks to @CristinTierneyGallery and much gratitude to the incredible art team who shared my curatorial vision

✨ For those building collections that embrace innovation and legacy in equal measure, DM me to discuss placement opportunities.

🎯 The #1 thing serious collectors do first?

✨Start with a sense of focus rooted in genuine passion. Be it a movement, medium, geography, or artist, think of it as a compass, not a rule. It sharpens your eye over time while leaving space for discovery and delight.

A vision or guiding framework, while allowing room for discovery and even detours, can help guide and refine your collecting journey.

✔️ Example: take collectors Edythe and Eli Broad — their collection ultimately centered around post-war and contemporary art, spanning multiple movements and media, and it helped shape their museum, The Broad in Los Angeles as a lasting institutional legacy.
✨

👉 Collecting isn’t just about what you buy—it’s about what you believe in. What vision drives your collection?
GOOD AURA One of my favorite parts of cura GOOD AURA

One of my favorite parts of curating? Discovering new artists — and watching their work breathe new life into a space. ✨

This acquisition project was pure joy: a vibrant curation designed to energize and welcome every visitor through the door. Movement, color, and light do all the talking. 🎨

Enter French artist Daniel Mato — a master of light and open space. His work channels the spirit of the color-field legends (think Rothko, Stella, Morris Louis), but with a fresh pulse: saturated hues that shift from moody depths to electric neon glows.

The result? A kinetic symphony of color that feels alive. ⚡️

I am grateful to @MorganLehmanGallery for making this magic happen and to my gracious client for the wonderful opportunity to showcase these beauties.

NY-based artist Kate McQuillen turns slapstick chaos into pure visual energy through her process that employs squeegees, silkscreens, and layered imperfections.

Think: fists + TNT blasts ➡ transformed into vibrating brush marks, and Lichtenstein-like brushstrokes blurred at the edges.

I’m beyond thrilled to have placed this work in a NY collection where it now joins an impressive list of blue-chip contemporary artists...

🎨IN THE STUDIO 🖌️ One of the greatest pri 🎨IN THE STUDIO 🖌️

One of the greatest privileges of my work is stepping into artists’ studios. These visits can’t be captured in just one reel, but the gratitude I feel is endless.

The East End has long been a retreat for artists—not for glitz, but for the light, air, open space and sea that continue to inspire. From Pollock and de Kooning to Mary Heilmann and so many living artists today, this place has given space for voices to emerge and visions to grow.

Opening their studios—sharing works in progress, struggles, and dreams—is an act of bravery. They remind us that art isn’t just to be collected, but to heal, reflect, and connect us as humans.

Each open studio feels like a gift, and I’m fortunate to live in proximity to so much hidden brilliance here on the East End.

Here’s to artists: past, present, and future. Thank you for showing us why art matters—always. 💫
